Travelling, not for the faint hearted
by: Rowan Mallon

In the world of uncertainty in which we live, I find myself musing on the fact that the only thing that is certain is uncertainty… oh, and death and taxes!

Yet amidst this uncertainty, something thrives within the heart of each one of us to peer out the window and wonder about what lies beyond the horizon. And I find that this "feeling", "urge" or whatever else you'd like to call it has prompted man to step out into the unknown and experience what life has to offer.

Let me explain, as I firmly believe that travelling, even those down the road, pack just enough for the weekend type of trips can pose a test that ignites the feeling of adventure and triumph that exists within us, and in my experience I've found that it's that little bit of adversity and subsequent conquering of it, that has made these trips that much more satisfactory.

I recall the first time travelling to the border and the whole trip there stressing about the fact that I had the wrong documents for our car or that I had forgotten my passport only to recall the relief and joy as we waved goodbye to the border officials without a glitch and everything in order.

Or the time when we went away to a camp site in the mountains and it rained so hard that 2 out of the 3 tents we had where flooded and how we all huddled up in the remaining tent until the rain stopped. Cooking food was an adventure in itself but always seemed to be a team effort and bacon and eggs in the morning has never tasted sweeter.

You see! Travelling is not for the feint hearted, it's a certainty that something will go wrong on a trip no matter how well planned or executed. But the feeling inside of having stepped out the door or "down the road" and having faced the unknown, that keeps you looking out the window wondering what's next!
